Matthew 8:23-25, we read “23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 They went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
Jesus teaches the disciples a valuable lesson on faith. In Verse 26 Jesus replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
In 1970, just after the 6 day war, I visited the Holy Land with a group from our church. We rode in a boat on the Sea of Galilee to the side of Jordan and planned to return in the boat because Jordan was off limits at that time.
A storm arose unexpectedly and we had to receive special permission from the Jordanian government to take the bus to the other side to pick us up because the storm made it unsafe for us to return on the boat. That’s how quickly a storm can com up on the Sea of Galilee. We got to see it firsthand!
In verse 27, “The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
I can see myself in this picture. Jesus was going to the other side and not concerned. He was at peace and went to sleep. We, or at least I, lack faith in the midst of the storm to believe I will reach the other side of the storm.
In Matthew 28:20, Jesus said, “And surely I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
